SMS for e-commerce and retail: order notifications, abandoned cart and campaigns

SMS runs alongside the whole purchase cycle: it confirms the order, announces the parcel has arrived, recovers the abandoned cart and brings the customer back with a promotion. A practical guide for retail.

One channel for the whole purchase cycle

Email is opened in a fraction of cases, and hours later. SMS is read within minutes, at the moment the customer is waiting for news: that the order was confirmed, that the parcel ships today, that the offer ends tonight. That is why in retail and e-commerce SMS lives alongside email and push notifications, and is reserved for whatever is urgent or has immediate value.

This article walks through the uses at each stage of the purchase cycle, with message examples and the metrics worth watching.

Transactional notifications: confirmation, shipping and delivery

Every order creates at least three contact moments: purchase confirmation, shipping notice and delivery confirmation. Automating them by SMS from the e-commerce platform, the ERP or the logistics system cuts calls to the contact centre and improves the experience. An example:

“StoreX: your order #48213 has shipped. It arrives tomorrow between 10am and 2pm. Track it: storex.mx/s/48213”

For the last mile, notices such as “the courier is 15 minutes away” or “your parcel was delivered at 12:40” reduce failed deliveries and complaints. These messages are sent one by one through the API, and their delivery status comes back by webhook so you know the customer was notified.

OTP and security during checkout

Protecting payment, password changes and returns with an OTP code reduces fraud and chargebacks. It also verifies the phone number at account creation, which guarantees later notifications reach the right person. Using a sender ID carrying the brand name helps the customer tell legitimate messages from impersonation attempts.

Abandoned cart recovery and repeat purchase

An SMS reminder one to three hours after the cart is abandoned, with the product and a direct link, recovers a meaningful share of lost sales. It works better when it is personal (customer name, product name) and when it offers something concrete: free shipping, limited stock, a deadline.

For repeat purchase, segmentation is the key: someone who bought pet food 25 days ago probably needs to restock; someone who has not bought in three months may respond to an incentive. The platform lets you upload segmented lists with variables and schedule the send at the right time. Every commercial message requires prior consent and an opt-out mechanism; we explain the legal requirements in Mexico in a separate article.

Promotional campaigns and loyalty programmes

Promotions with a short window (Buen Fin, Hot Sale, end-of-season clearance) are the natural ground for bulk SMS. A clear message with the offer, the deadline and a short trackable link, sent during business hours, produces traffic spikes measurable within minutes.

In loyalty, SMS works for points earned, benefits about to expire or birthday coupons. The golden rule is frequency: one or two commercial messages per week at most, and always with value for the person receiving them.

Running several brands and store locations

Chains usually run several brands, regions or store formats. On the Grupo Tecnophone platform each one can operate as an independent project, with its own sender, users, budget and reporting, under central administration. Reports by campaign and by operator let you compare results and clean lists.

If your retail operation needs to automate notifications or launch campaigns with measurable results, take a look at the retail solution or request a demo.
