SMS for schools are text messages that a school, private school or university sends to parents, guardians and students to notify, remind and confirm: from a class cancellation to a tuition due date. They reach any mobile phone, with no app, no data plan and no need for the family to be in a chat group. This guide explains how schools in Mexico use SMS, with 20 ready-to-adapt examples and best practices for sending them.
Why SMS works for reaching families

In Mexico, 84.6% of the population uses a mobile phone and most lines are prepaid, according to INEGI’s ENDUTIH 2025 survey. Many families do not always have mobile data or install the school app, but every phone receives SMS. That is why text messaging is the channel that reaches everyone, including grandparents or guardians who pick up the children. More data in mobile phone users in Mexico.
In addition, since November 3, 2026 students in basic education cannot use their phones during the school day, so urgent communication goes through the school. See what changes in phone-free schools: how to keep families informed.

Best practices for texting parents
- Ask for consent at enrollment. Include each guardian’s number and their authorization to receive notices in the enrollment form, and mention it in your privacy notice.
- Use a sender ID with the school name. An alphanumeric sender helps families recognize the message and not confuse it with fraud.
- Be careful with links. If you send a link to the school platform, use your own domain. See how to include links in SMS without looking like fraud.
- Segment by grade and group. A notice for 3rd grade B should not reach the whole school.
- Respect sending hours. Except for emergencies, send between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. You can schedule messages by date and time.
- Measure delivery. With delivery reports you know which families did not receive a notice and can reach them another way.
