SMS is used in almost every industry, but each sector puts it to work differently. This guide collects the most common SMS use cases in Mexico for 18 sectors, with a sample message for each one and a link to the dedicated guide.
All of these use cases can be sent from our bulk SMS platform for businesses, through the web platform or the API. For campaign requirements and best practices, see the bulk SMS guide for Mexico.
Why SMS works in almost any sector

In 2025, 84.6% of people aged six and over in Mexico used a mobile phone, according to INEGI’s ENDUTIH survey. SMS reaches all of those phones without relying on an app, mobile data or notification permissions. That is why an insurer, a school and a city government all use it.
Before the examples, three rules that apply to every sector:
- Identify yourself. Always use the same sender and put your brand name at the start of the text.
- One action per message. Confirm, pay, book or show up: the customer should know what to do after a single read.
- Keep transactional and promotional apart. A payment notice is not an offer, and the consent rules are different.

How to adapt these examples to your business
- Personalize with data from your list (name, date, amount). You can do it without coding from an Excel or CSV file.
- Use links on your own brand domain and avoid generic shorteners: it is the best defense against smishing.
- Send at reasonable hours and avoid late nights and early mornings.
- If you expect a reply (YES, 1, CANCEL), use a sender that supports it and set up two-way SMS.
- Track delivery of every message with delivery reports (DLR).
Transactional or promotional: the difference that changes the rules
An appointment reminder, a payment notice or a class cancellation is a transactional message: the customer expects it because they have a relationship with you. An offer, on the other hand, is advertising and requires prior consent.
In Mexico, people can also add their number to Profeco’s Public Registry to Avoid Advertising (REPEP). Before a promotional campaign, clean your list and keep proof of consent. We explain it in our guide to SMS marketing regulations.
